Essay Topic Writing

You just need to find something you really want to say. Since I started helping students with their college essays, I’ve learned that an astonishing amount has been published on the topic of… choosing a topic. Additional (though less well-documented) information on the matter exists as urban legend (i.e., those rumors you hear about how you need to have survived a Tsunami to have a good enough topic, or about how writing your essay in the shape of a piano works). This misinformation gets passed on from student to student, based on what’s worked for others. The result is that students can become paralyzed over the task of choosing what to write about before they even begin. They scuttle their chances to say something important to an audience who really wants to listen. Don’t let this happen to you. Know this: If you show up at your computer with a willing attitude and a good list of facts about you—your interests, traits and passions– irresistible essay topics will find you. Although the topic will vary, the subject is always you. The trick is finding a topic that will help you highlight your spirit and capture your voice on the page.
