One of the common myths about college application essays is that you will be writing just one. Many students (especially those who apply to small liberal arts colleges) will be asked to write additional essays, which I refer to as supplements. This makes sense: such colleges value writing and plan to ask you to write a lot for them. They want to know that you’re up for the challenge. Some schools (Tufts and the University of Chicago, for example) pride themselves on attracting quirky and creative students who actually look forward to writing their many supplemental essays. I recommend looking at a few of the colleges that interest you right now to see whether they ask for these additional essays. The topics often change each year, but you can still get a sense of what you’ll be asked from earlier prompts.
