Time to Write

Time to Write

That depends on each writer, but it’s common for the essay writing process to take two to three weeks from beginning to end, and it’s best to meet weekly during that time to keep your sense of momentum. (Momentum is critical to essay writing success.) For example, many students meet with me to discuss topic ideas (say on a Monday week one), meet the following week to discuss a first draft (Monday week two), then meet a week later to discuss a revision of that first draft (Monday week three).

Usually I look at the final copy of the essay a day or two after that, so students often produce polished essays in a little over a two-week period. I have worked with students who wrote two or more essays in under a week, but they devoted a great deal of time to that effort, and did little else during that time. Give yourself the gift of a little time – time allows writers to reflect more deeply and revise more efficiently.
